Went and saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and Winchester this week, well, actually just got back from seeing Winchester. Both are AMAZING films.

Three Billboards stars Frances McDormand and Woody Harrelson. It's about a woman whose daughter is murdered (before the events of the film) and she gets fed up with the police because she believes they're dragging their feet in the investigation. It has some good lessons in there about the kinds of mistakes one can make when a person believes they are right.

Winchester is a suspense/thriller with a bit of horror in it. It's PG-13 that tells you about where the horror level is. The amount of suspense is limited though. Don't get me wrong, it was fantastically written and the acting is marvelous. The suspense is tempered by the gnawing fact that movies tend to work out for the best in the end, very few don't. This film never really manages to cut that thread. Which I suppose has its advantages in that you really don't know how things will turn out until the end.

I changed the title of this thread. Saw another movie last night and it was fantastic. Figured I'd keep them all in one topic here rather than creating a new post for every film I see 'cause there'd be hundreds of new topics every year just for this.

Anywho... or Annie Hu if she's Chinese... I went and saw Darkest Hour starring Gary Oldman as Great Britain's First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Winston Churchill. This is not really a plot driven film by any means at all. There's hardly any real conflict because this film is intended to be true to historical events and the people. It's a wonderful character driven film. I do not know too much about Winston Churchill myself, aside from his amazing quotes (a few of which are in the film), but my uncle is steeped in World War II History. He's got a library of over a thousand books on World War II and all the figures, particularly the European Theater. Not only has he read each of those books but he's written papers and has study notes on practically all of them. Especially Winston Churchill. That said, my uncle believes this film is as close to being historically accurate as can be without someone going back in time and filming it as it happened. So I decided I wanted to see it and I am certainly glad I did. This film has been nominated for Golden Globe Award for Best Picture 2017. Three Billboards (in my first post) has also been nominated for Best Picture 2017.

Saw Small Town Crime last night. It's not in theaters any more, at least I don't think it is. I've never heard of any of the cast members, but they all gave some great performances. It's about an alcoholic ex-police officer who comes across a murder victim and basically takes up the case as a private investigator. It turns out he's bitten off more than he can chew. If you want to watch this one it's streaming for free at:

Went and saw Avengers: Infinity War a few weeks ago. Everyone's seen it or will see it or has no interest in seeing it. So no one should have any interest in reading about it.

Another movie I saw recently was Bad Samaritan. I didn't even know this movie existed until I was browsing Fandango.com and came across the poster. It's not the best movie in the world, but David Tennant's performance is pretty good. All other parts are filled by unknowns. It's about a couple of guys who set up a valet business as cover for burglaries and one of them happens to discover a kidnapped woman in what turns out to be a serial killer's house. The plot is more or less predictable from there. A few characters are introduced in the beginning of the movie, not seen until way later and when they do show up again you're wondering who the hell they are.

What do you get when you combine Die Hard and The Towering Inferno?

SKYSCRAPER

It's a fairly suspenseful (assuming you can forget what you've seen in the trailers) movie about a guy who goes to work as an independent safety & security consultant to green light projects for construction and/or underwriting by insurance companies. He gets hired to inspect the systems of the world's tallest skyscraper. The height of the building is never given exactly (as far as I recall) but the film says it is more than three times the height of The Empire State Building, more than twice the height of Burj Khalifa, and the fire (spoiler alert: the building catches fire) on the 96th floor is more than a hundred stories down from the penthouses. Obviously with such a huge building it will take a few years to complete the job, so the guy moves his family into the building.

It's the typical 'bad guys take over skyscraper looking for something valuable' story arch. Our special forces building inspector shows up, kicks ass and saves the day.

Overall its an enjoyable movie. Not a lot of hype surrounding it, and it exceeded my expectations. Unlike Jurassic World, which was hyped wildly beyond humanity's current exaggerative abilities and then fell flat on its face, this film delivers on the excitement.

So I've seen two movies recently, one quite a while ago yet I am glad to see it is still in theaters. The other more recently and it can't be pulled from cinemas soon enough.

The former is Christopher Robin, the Winnie The Pooh movie that came out early August. It was a very well done film with some hilarious moments in it. Ewan McGregor isn't particularly smashing or overly stupendous in his performance in this film, but he nails the character down and that's ultimately what matters. My personal favorite line of the film was from Eeyore, who says in his ever-defeated monotonous depressing tone: "Great, now it has a weapon." I really enjoyed it and actually went and saw it twice.

The other film is truly disgusting and should never have been made. It's simply an amateur cameraman's attempt to see what he can get away with by using puppets rather than people to make a pornographic film and release it in theaters nationwide. If actual actors had done this stuff, the resulting film would only have seen limited release in back-alley slums from some shady character in a trench coat & sunglasses. If you've seen the previews of it (which I will not post here because even the trailer violates the rules of our site), then you have seen all of the "funny" stuff that the movie has to offer. Take away the puppets and you have a reverse, poorly performed, cheaply produced Who Framed Roger Rabbit knock-off in which a puppet detective ex-cop tries to solve some murders. It really is what it would have been like if Bob Hoskins in WFRR had been a cartoon and the comic relief was a live person. Except that Melissa McCarthy is simply a drug addicted, bloated windbag of flesh in this film who serves no purpose except to reply to a few lines from a puppet. Do not waste your money or time viewing this trash.

Saw two new movies this past week. Both are worth seeing.

The first was a movie I hadn’t heard of before arriving at the theater. It’s called The Little Stranger. It’s about a British physician who more or less moves in with a wealthy patient living in a mansion. While the plot takes a while to get moving, it picks up speed as odd things begin happening around the house. You spend the entire movie wondering if the son (horribly disfigured in WWII) has gone crazy, if the old woman is imagining things or if something supernatural is actually occurring.

The other movie I saw was The Nun. It was fantastic. Worth seeing twice. In fact I’m literally sitting in the theater waiting for a showing to start as I type this. Ties in very well with The Conjuring films, this one taking place at the very beginning of the chronology of the films. It tells how the demon Valak was released. The movie begins with the suicide of a Nun in Romania. A priest and a young Nun are sent by the Vatican to investigate. The whole mystery for the audience is figuring out why the hell the two nuns in the beginning would open the door in the first place.
